What's Your Why

As the two newest members of the NCCEP team, we are eager to support the GEAR UP community. As the Director of Research and Evaluation, Jackie will help assess what’s working in college and career readiness, and as the Director of Practice, Dana will help identify and share solutions to common challenges.

We are passionate about what we do. However, what we do is ultimately based on why we do this work. So, we asked ourselves and other members of the NCCEP team to reflect on their why.

Why do we do this work?

Jackie Mania, Director of Research and Evaluation: As a first-generation college student, the work of GEAR UP and NCCEP is near to my heart—I want to use my professional voice and abilities to support the next generation of children striving toward their dreams.

Dana Beck, Director of Practice: College access is a social justice issue. I believe in the mission of GEAR UP and want to support our community in doing the best work they can.

Betty Paugh Ortiz, Vice President of Programs: As a staunch believer in GEAR UP, in this community I have found a home, inspiration, and hope.

Emily Jeffries, Associate Director of Government Relations: I do this work because our students are the future of this country! Their bright futures lead to a bright and hopeful future for our nation. I work every day to ensure the opportunity to dream and succeed is available for each and every GEAR UP student.

Thomas Cech, Senior Data Scientist: To use data to advance social good.

Danielle Walker, Associate Director of Programs: As a child, I was inspired by women of color who pushed me to take risks and to beat back the stereotypes that are often associated with black girls. I do this work to be what others have been to me; a cheerleader, a challenger, and a champion of student achievement.

Katie Hill, Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives: I believe that every student deserves the chance to boldly pursue their dreams.

Alex Chough, President: I do this work because for many, many years in school I was told that I wouldn’t amount to anything. I believed it too, until I met two teachers who encouraged and challenged me in ways that no one else had. Everyone I meet in GEAR UP reminds me—in the best way possible—of Mr. Patrick and Mrs. Watson. GEAR UP is about empowering people who nurture the best in others. We need more people like that in the world.

Kelly Pappas, Director of Career & College Clubs: Because I know this work truly makes a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students.

Janeé Williams, Associate Director of Operations: I do this work because many of my family members grew up in underserved areas, discouraged to complete school, let alone, continue that education to receive a college degree. Some broke the cycle, others didn’t. This is my opportunity to help set the record straight for our future generations. I do this work so my family knows they have support, and can follow their dreams, regardless of where they grew up.
