Empowering gear up youth
The Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) helps GEAR UP high school students identify and maximize their leadership skills, create a national network of peers, and receive the tools and training to make positive change happen in their communities and around the world.
Over 3.5 days, the YLS enhances participants’ ability to speak confidently, work effectively in teams, and builds their capacity to lead. The program culminates with a student-led presentation to the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference attendees.
All slots for 2019 YLS have been filled.

If your program has been approved to have students attend this year’s summit, please follow the steps below to secure your students’ participation. Check out the YLS Information Sheet and this 2019 YLS draft agenda for more information.
Step 1: SELECT STUDENTS
NCCEP seeks to create a geographically diverse cohort of students who are not friends, and encourages programs to choose students from different schools. You can provide students with the YLS Guide For Prospective Students to gauge interest. We look for students that demonstrate the following characteristics:
Excited to attend and fully participate in the program.
Have immediate purpose for leadership training and will apply what is learned to current endeavors.
Can behave appropriately in an adult conference setting.
Welcome moderate physical activity, and long training hours.
Are very involved in GEAR UP programming.
Display leadership qualities inside the classroom and in the community.
Step 2: COMPLETE THE ONLINE APPLICATION
After selecting your students, submit all of their information and authorization forms using the online application. In order to fill out the online application, please review the YLS Application Submission Guidelines. Be sure to upload the required authorization forms found below. Applications must be submitted by May 3, 2019.
