Recapping the 2026 GEAR UP Academy: Learning, Connection, and Renewed Purpose
Earlier this month, the GEAR UP community gathered for this year's National GEAR UP Academy — and left with more than just new strategies.
More than 900 attendees participated across 36 hours of sessions, including GEAR UP–specific classes on supporting students’ career and college readiness, leveraging program data, strengthening family and community engagement, and building leadership within schools. Participants left with tools they could put to use right away, and with all sessions available for the next three months, the learning extends well beyond the event itself.
Just as important was the time intentionally set aside to connect. Speed networking, chair yoga, and BINGO gave attendees space to step away from the content and engage with one another. It was a reminder that the relationships within this community are part of the work.
The keynotes reinforced that spirit. Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy grounded the room in purpose: "GEAR UP exists because of the courage of the team that keeps fighting for it. Courage begins when we ask ourselves, 'Why do we do this?' The why is what gives us the courage." Josh Shipp, a GEAR UP alum and youth advocate, offered a personal reflection on what it means for one adult to show up fully for a young person — a full-circle moment that brought the mission into sharp focus. Duncan Kirkwood closed with a practical message on resilience: it isn't something you have, it's something you build.
Supported by 29 sponsors and exhibitors, the Academy was a strong demonstration of what this community looks like when it comes together.
