With the largest number of GEAR UP cohort students now in the first year of college, what have we learned about GEAR UP 7th year programming? What worked in promoting first-year student success? What were the specific challenges related to program design, staffing and student service models, and garnering match that we need to find solutions for? If you’re interested in contributing to our collective effort to address these critical questions (and more) pertaining to the GEAR UP 7th year, please join us for this pre-conference summit.

The purpose of the summit is to convene GEAR UP leaders to have open and frank discussions about the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the GEAR UP 7th year. Through a facilitated series of dialogues, we hope to learn and document best practices, present recommendations pertaining to common challenges, and establish a foundation of knowledge that can benefit the broader GEAR UP community.

Given the unique nature of the summit, there are some specific requirements you should be aware of prior to registration, including:

  • Which GEAR UP Programs Should Attend? The summit is ideally suited for programs that recently completed or are on the precipice of serving GEAR UP students in their first year of postsecondary education. By design, the summit will focus on learning from the experiences of these programs, so if your program is several years away from implementing the GEAR UP 7th year, you may NOT be able to immediately contribute to or benefit from the summit. Of course, the lessons learned from the summit will be documented and shared with the entire GEAR UP community.
     
  • Who Should Attend from My Program? To keep the dialogues somewhat manageable, we will be limiting registration to two individuals from each GEAR UP program and to 200 individuals in total. Ideally, these two individuals would have been directly responsible for the design and implementation of GEAR UP 7th year services.
     
  • Will There be Additional Information Required? Yes. To help us effectively organize the facilitated discussions, we will want to group you with GEAR UP programs that share similar characteristics. This will require your program complete a short survey. In addition, we may ask your program to complete some basic descriptions of your 7th year services to make the most of our time together in person. Of course, we’ll do our best to keep this information collection short and to the point.
