Concurrent Session #42 & #43 (Monday, July 21, 2014)

Large-scale multi-state evaluations can offer evidence on the effectiveness of programs such as GEAR UP. These studies, however, possess a number of research challenges. Presenters will provide an overview of an on-going 14-state longitudinal study that examines differences in the academic growth and educational outcomes of GEAR UP students and a matched comparison group. The audience will learn about the challenges facing this study and the design elements that were selected to best address those challenges while allowing for the flexibility of program delivery across projects. This two—part session will highlight two—arms of the project, encompassing research and evaluation issues. (Part one of two sessions)
