Concurrent Session #4 (Monday, July 21,2014)

Workforce, Tutoring/Mentoring

Youth need to experience positive relationships with adults in order to grow up successfully.  One-to-one mentoring programs have been proven to help students overcome environmental challenges, stay out of trouble, and achieve success in school.  Presenters will demonstrate a model program called “Inspire U” that combines the one-to-one mentoring model of Big Brothers Big Sisters with an enhanced job shadowing program by incorporating workplace exposure, college access, and career awareness activities into mentoring meetings.  Participants will receive information on how to implement this program along with a toolkit for mentors and a summary of research on the program.
