Concurrent Session #119 (Tuesday, July 22, 2014)
This session explores how cultural wealth serves as a critical element to Latino parent engagement. Through interactive workshops that guide Latino parents in honest, respectful discussions of "gifts" and "barriers" in Latino culture, parents understand how to better support their child in achieving academic success and fulfilling college goals. Staff draw on parents' cultural funds of knowledge to show parents they have tools to engage their child in college discourse. Attendees will learn how UC Santa Cruz GEAR UP utilizes a culturally specific curriculum to build confidence in parents' own ability to support their child’s academic success and college aspirations.
