#19 - An Evaluation of College Savings Accounts and Financial Education Within GEAR UP: Barriers and Best Practices for Planning and Implementation
In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education included an invitational priority to develop college savings accounts and financial education as part of GEAR UP. Following the priority announcement, the Assets and Education Initiative at the University of Kansas proposed to evaluate GEAR UP programs with savings accounts. Five programs at varying stages of development and implementation participated in in-depth site evaluations. Evaluation findings yielded important information about the organizational capacity needed to administer college savings accounts. Attendees can expect to build their knowledge on best prac¬tices for developing college savings accounts and moving forward with financial education programming.
