SIOUX CITY | Monday marks the beginning of National GEAR UP Week with the Iowa College Student Aid Commission.
From Sept. 21-25, the week highlights Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a federally funded college access program that provides students and their families with college planning resources.
Sioux City is one of 12 school districts in Iowa chosen for the program last school year. The grant follows current district eighth-grade students as they progress through school and college.
Iowa College Aid Executive Director Karen Misjak said improving college access and success in college is critical to prepare students for tomorrow's careers.
"National GEAR UP Week provides an opportunity for us to reflect on the excellent progress Iowa and the nation has made in student preparation though GEAR UP," Misjak said in a statement.
