In a ceremony before 1,500 college access professionals, Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX-20) received the 2014 Champions of Student Success award from the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) on July 22, 2014.
The honor was presented as part of the 2014 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference. The GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a U.S. Department of Education-funded program focused on preparing low-income middle and high school students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. More than 125 GEAR UP programs across the U.S. serve approximately 650,000 students from low-income families. NCCEP is the training and technical assistance provider of the GEAR UP program.
The Champions for Student Success Award is given to individuals who work to improve public education for all students through enhanced public policy, and who support federal education programs designed to promote college access and student success.
