INSTITUTE, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State University is hosting a high school student leadership conference this week.
More than 500 students from 10 counties are expected to visit the Institute campus on Thursday for the fourth annual GEAR UP academy.
GEAR UP is a federally funded grant program coordinated by the state Higher Education Policy Commission. It stresses the importance of earning two or four-year degrees after high school and provides students with resources to help them achieve those degrees.
Participants will hear speeches from West Virginia State President Brian Hemphill and Higher Education Policy Commission Chancellor Paul Hill. They'll also help build science kits to take back to elementary school students in their communities.
