Success stories

The GEAR UP Mentor Program seeks to further develop a college-going environment at GU4LA high schools through peer-mentoring. These Mentors serve as role models on campus and seek to inspire their mentees to reach their ultimate potential.

The National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP), the voice of GEAR UP in Washington, DC, bestowed the 2013 Champion for Student Success Award on Senator Patty Murray (WA) in recognition of her continued commitment and leadership in education for minority, low-income and disadvantaged students. Even before becoming a Senator, she has demonstrated her unwavering support of children and families in need, visiting with GEAR UP schools and hosting GEAR UP students and educators in her State and Washington, DC offices.

GEAR UP 4 LA works with community partners to provide our parents with information on social/emotional development, financial aid counseling, college admissions and achievement tests, and college application procedures. Working together, we can ensure student success.

Over 200 Hawai‘i students used their creativity to write commercial advertising scripts that encouraged their peers to prepare for college and careers in the "Take Charge of Your Future Commercial Script Writing Challenge," sponsored by GEAR UP Hawaiʻi, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, and Clear Channel Hawaiʻi. The winning script was written by former high school senior, Mc Millan Ching, from Campbell High School and produced into the following television commercial created by Berad Studios.
