Capacity-Building Workshop Format
The 2010 Capacity-Building Workshop will offer a menu of
professional development activities organized around four major
components:
-
Workshops, which provide
in-depth training that spans all three days of the event.
-
Open Space
Networking , which offers an array of GEAR UP-specific
discussion and problem-solving roundtables on February 9.
-
How-To Seminars, a group of more
in-depth training opportunities offered during the afternoon of February
9.
-
Please refer to the schedule at-a-glance for an illustration of how the
workshops and seminars are structured.
1. Workshops
Participants are invited to register for one of the
following six workshops. Each participant will register for and
attend only one workshop over the course of the three-day
event. Each workshop provides participants with four training
sessions addressing the workshop topic, held the morning and afternoon
of Monday, February 8; the morning of Tuesday, February 9; and the
morning of Wednesday, February 10.

2. Open Space Networking
First introduced in 2009, NCCEP will again offer attendees the
opportunity to participate in Open Space networking and problem solving
sessions. The theory behind Open Space is that the issues that are most
important to the participants will be raised and addressed by those
participants most qualified and capable. Capacity-Building Workshop
participants will be given the opportunity to discuss their most
pressing programmatic issues with the experts in attendance at the
Workshop—the participants themselves!
The Open Space Networking event will take place simultaneously with
the How-To Seminars on Tuesday, February 9, 2009, from 1:45 pm –
3:30 pm.
The principles of Open Space are simple:
• Whoever comes are the right people.
• Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.
• Whenever it starts is the right time.
• When it is over it is over.
There is also The Law of Two Feet which states that if anyone
finds her or himself in a situation where they are neither learning nor
contributing, they can use their two feet to go to a more productive
place. This emphasizes that everyone is present voluntarily. The way it
works is as follows:
- Participants identify the topics, questions, issues and/or problems
that are most pressing to them and their GEAR UP project. NCCEP will
work with Workshop registrants to identify some of those topics prior to
arrival in New Orleans. Other topics will be identified by attendees
right there on site.
- Attendees identify the topic(s) and discussions in which they would
like to participate based on what they are interested in learning and
where they have something to contribute.
- Topics are assigned to rooms and attendees participate in the
discussion of their choosing. If at any point the discussion is no
longer relevant and/or you are neither learning nor contributing, you
leave and choose another topic.
3. How-To Seminars
While some people may appreciate the flexibility of Open
Space, other Workshop attendees may want to attend a more structured
session. The How-To Seminars are designed to provide information of
critical importance to the effective operation of a GEAR UP program.
How-To Seminars will be presented on Tuesday from 1:45 pm - 3:00
pm. The How-To sessions will be offered concurrently on Tuesday
and will not be repeated. Seating for these sessions will be available
on a first-come, first-served basis.
4. Pre-Workshop
Sessions
The U.S. Department of Education will be presenting a series of
Pre-Workshop Sessions on Sunday, February 7. The Pre-Workshop
Sessions include:
