Opportunities for Parents at the
2009 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference
NCCEP recognizes the great work done by parents in the GEAR UP
community and has created opportunities for parents to be involved in
the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference.
Parent Leadership Institute
NCCEP is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our third Parent
Leadership Institute as part of the 2009 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual
Conference. The Institute will include a variety of skills building and
networking opportunities for parents and/or family leaders who are
involved with state or local GEAR UP partnerships, ENLACE or other
college access programs.
The goal of the Parent Leadership Institute is
to cultivate a group of parents with a greater capacity to (1) promote
positive change in their children, school and community and (2) move
forward an agenda that centers around making college possible for all
students. This goal will be accomplished by:
- Providing networking opportunities for GEAR UP parents.
- Providing a sharing forum for GEAR UP parents.
- Raising the awareness of the variety of activities in which GEAR UP
parents and families are engaged.
- Enhancing some of the skills necessary to lead family involvement
efforts in a local GEAR UP site.
- Developing a set of next steps that participants will take to
strengthen their role as a leader in GEAR UP family involvement and
school improvement efforts.
You can register for the Parent Leadership Institute by registering
for the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference and placing a check in the
box next to "Parent Leadership Institute." All Institute sessions take
place concurrently with the Conference sessions; Parent Leadership
Institute registrants are encouraged to join the remaining conference
events and activities at the conclusion of the Institute on the
afternoon of Tuesday, July 21.

NCCEP is pleased to announce the winners of the GEAR UP Parent
Leadership Awards. Betty Biggs, Sandra Gil, Willa Maynard, Maria Vargas,
and George Williams are all doing outstanding work on behalf of GEAR UP
parents and students. These Parent Leaders will be honored at the 2009
NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference and will participate at the Parent
Leadership Institute. The Parent Leadership Awards and the Parent
Leadership Institute are made possible through the support of CollegeEd,
a College Board program.
