How can a student apply?
Students must be nominated by their GEAR UP grant in order to apply.
Once nominated, the student will need to provide their director with
official score reports and an essay regarding their college and career
goals. Please see the application for the exact essay prompt.
How many
students can a GEAR UP grantee nominate?
Each GEAR UP grantee may nominate one (1) student.
What students are eligible?
Any GEAR UP student who has taken an officially administered college
admissions exam at least twice and demonstrated improvement on that
particular test is eligible to be nominated for this scholarship.
What tests are
eligible for the award?
The scholarships award students for improvement on the SAT or ACT
exams. This does NOT include an improvement in score between the PSAT
and SAT or PLAN and ACT; the student must have taken the officially
administered SAT or ACT twice for consideration.
Eligible test scores must be from officially administered tests,
meaning they must be administered and scored by the test maker. Scores
from practice tests administered by schools or test preparation
companies are not eligible for consideration. Scores may be submitted in
one of the following forms:
- an official score report;
- a photocopy of the official score report made by the GEAR UP
Director;
- an official transcript that contains test score information
What will be
considered in the application?
The primary indicator for selection will be the student's test score
improvement. Once a group of applicants are identified who demonstrate
the highest levels of improvement, the essay will serve to select the
final scholarship recipients.
When will the scholarships
be awarded?
Scholarships will be awarded at the 2006 NCCEP Annual Conference,
held July 23-26, 2006 in Washington, DC. The student's scholarship
includes three (3) nights hotel stay and conference registration. GEAR
UP Directors will be responsible for making travel arrangements for the
student and will be reimbursed; however, travel expenses exceeding $400
must be approved by NCCEP.
What
is required to send the student to the NCCEP Annual Conference?
Scholarship recipients must have a chaperone. If there is a staff
member from the GEAR UP program already scheduled to attend the Annual
Conference, they would be an acceptable chaperone. Hotel fees, travel,
and conference registration are NOT covered for the chaperone.
