NCCEP and Walden University are pleased to announce the winners of the $2,500 scholarships to the following GEAR UP practitioners:

Lloyd Peck from Liverpool, New York spoke about his commitment to first generation students and his interest in how a Doctoral degree from Walden would help him take his learnings and experience in New York State and apply them as a superintendent in a southern state to which he plans to relocate. His letter of recommendation elaborated on his student-centered approach, his leadership skills in the school and the work he has done with GEAR UP.

Faith Graham from Jamestown, New York has been with GEAR UP for three years and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree with Walden in Administrator Leadership. Her personal statement describes her desire to create a broad college-going culture in her home town and her passion for young people in her community, as well as a vision of how a Doctoral degree will help her achieve that vision. Her letter of recommendation provided examples of how she has taken a leadership role in GEAR UP with teachers, students and administrators, as well as the programmatic contributions she has made to GEAR UP. On a personal note, I know Faith and have seen her commitment to GEAR UP and the students she serves.

Keila Foster from Senatobia, Mississippi has been with GEAR UP for just over a year and is interested in pursuing a Doctoral degree in Teacher Leadership with Walden. Her personal statement elaborates on how she plans to use this degree to improve her skills and effectiveness as a math teacher; a content area to which she seems truly committed and passionate. Her commitment to low income students is also expressed in this statement. The letter of recommendation describes Keila as a leader and motivator who has demonstrated a commitment to her students, as well as their parents. Although she live in MS, she teacher in Memphis, TN.
