AT&T Foundation Provides $5 Million Grant Initiative
to Support GEAR UP Education Partnerships
Across the U.S.
2006 NCCEP Grants Promoting
Excellence and Innovation in Education
NCCEP and the AT&T Foundation (formerly the SBC Foundation) were
pleased to continue their competitive special grants program in 2006 to
further support GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs) education partnerships. Under this program, the
AT&T Foundation is working in conjunction with NCCEP to support
community/education partnerships and improve student academic
achievement and success in K-16 education.
The AT&T Foundation grant to NCCEP is supporting GEAR UP grantees by
funding after-school and summer enrichment programs in math, science,
reading, and technological literacy, as well as helping both teachers
and students use technology in the classroom to enhance the teaching and
learning functions and improve students' academic performance. The grant
competition was open to all current GEAR UP grantees throughout the
United States and U.S. territories. With the grant, the AT&T
Foundation - the largest corporate supporter of the GEAR UP partnership
- brings its total philanthropic commitment to $10 million in support of
improving college access for low-income students through GEAR UP
programs.
During the 2006 calendar year, NCCEP, on behalf of the AT&T
Foundation, awarded approximately $3.6 million to eligible GEAR UP
partnerships. The Promoting Excellence and Innovation in Education
grants are competitive grants, each funded for a one-year period
starting on the date of the grant award.
