Here’s the scoop on advertising: Companies pay people big money to come up with ideas on how to get you to spend your money on whatever they’re selling. Don’t buy into their gimmicks!
Learn how to spot a sales pitch and how to separate the truth from hype. The following are a few tips:
- Read the “fine print” about a product or service.
- Magazines, newspapers, and even TV programs will sometimes have reliable information about how a product performs. Some publications, such as Consumer Reports, are dedicated to doing this. Ask your school librarian to help you locate these publications.
- Ask your friends or family if they think the product is a good deal. Or, check out bulletin boards on the Internet—look for someone who owns the item and can give you the straight scoop.
- Don’t forget to ask yourself: “Is this something I need or want?
