My Money - Spending It

I Need, Need, Need It … or Do I?
Here’s a great way to make smart choices about spending money. Every time you are thinking about buying something, ask yourself: “Do I need this, or do I want it?”

A “need” is something we must have to live, such as healthy food and basic clothes. A “want” is something we might like to have, but don’t have to have right away, such as a $100 pair of shoes or eating out every day.

When you ask yourself, “Do I need this, or do I want it?” you may be surprised at how many things are “wants.” Try to buy only the things you need most of the time. Then, when you have saved up some money , treat yourself to something you want.

Can you tell the difference between a need and a want? Try this quiz. Which one is a need?

4. A. car or B. bus pass
5. A. eyeglasses or B. movie tickets
