Here’s a little secret that most adults have learned the hard way: Keep your friends and your money separate.
One of the quickest ways to destroy a friendship is to get into a hassle about money. Make a promise with yourself that you won’t borrow money from your friends—and you won’t lend money to them either.
If your buddy asks for a loan, simply say, “Sorry, but I can’t. I made a promise to myself not to lend money.”
The same goes for allowing someone else to borrow your car or use your credit card. It doesn’t matter who uses the card—you will be responsible for paying the bill.
One more tip: You may see your friends spending money on things you would like to do or have, but can’t afford. Try not to let that make you feel bad.
Instead, be proud that you know when you can afford something and when you can’t. In the long run, you will probably reach your important goals first!
