Net Worth and Self-Worth

“I don’t have much money right now, but I feel really good about my plans and my future.”--Jamaal
As you think about money skills for real life, always remember this: Your net worth is not the same as your self-worth.

Net worth is a matter of simple math. You add up the value of everything you own (your assets), and subtract from that amount the sum of everything you owe (your liabilities or debts). The result is your net worth.

Your self-worth is a combination of qualities and values that makes you who you are. It’s what’s inside you—your character—that determines your true value to others.

Money is important, but it’s not everything. A good reputation and loyal friends are possessions that you can’t buy, but they are worth a lot.

Take a minute to look at your net worth and your self-worth. Print the worksheet below and list the value of all your assets and debts on the net-worth side. On the self-worth side, list all of your special qualities, values, and talents. Think about those things that you like most about yourself or that others say they like about you.

Always take care of your money, but always, always take care of your self-worth!
