Engaging Parents & Communities

Community engagement and the path to college

........for college capable but under served youth

The community, whether the national community or a circle of family and friends, plays a role in assuring that capable students are well-prepared for success in college.

This page contains links to selected web-based resources that provide information and direction for individuals or groups seeking to improve college preparation, access, and success for all students who aspire to a college degree, but especially for those who are traditionally under served. Good students who come from low-income families, who may be the first generation to even consider college, or who attend schools with a high proportion of low-income or minority students need solid academic preparation, information and encouragement. They need to know it is possible, and they need support in navigating the path to and through college.

Improved educational opportunity requires knowledge and action by many people at many levels:
Students and families
K-12 schools and districts
Institutions of higher education
Local communities
State programs and policies (P-16)
Federal programs and policies
The transition from one level to the next needs special attention

There are many support programs and organizations focused on assuring that all students who want to go to college can do so. There are early intervention programs in schools and districts all over the country. Virtually every college and university offers postsecondary support programs to assure the success of their students. Economic conditions make it more important than ever for such programs to conduct a well-designed evaluation aimed at improving program results while minimizing costs.

Even though there are many individuals and organizations working to assure equal educational opportunity, the path to college is a bumpy one with many obstacles along the way. Through state policy and community action, the path can be improved.
