Student Track Concurrent Sessions for Middle School participants

Monday, July 24, 2006 • 10:45 am - 12:00 pm
Getting Started
A good time to start thinking about life after high school is before you even get into high school. This is especially true if you think college is in your future. Starting early gives you the opportunity to consider your options and develop an action plan that will guide you through the years that follow. This session will help you identify goals and then develop an action plan that will guide you toward the achievement of your goals.

Monday, July 24, 2006 • 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm
Who Am I?

As you begin to think about your future, it is important that you understand who you are and where you fit into the "bigger picture" of the world in which you live. This session will help you identify those characteristics that define who you are and provide you with strategies and an orientation to resources that will help you become the best "you" you can be.

Monday, July 24, 2006 • 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm
The Choices We Make
As you enter high school, you will be able to explore new opportunities. Some of them relate to talents and interests, academic and otherwise, you may have already discovered. Others might be completely new to you. In many cases, the choices you make will determine the kinds of things you will be able to do after high school. In this session, you will identify the options that will confront you as you proceed through high school and develop strategies for making the most of these opportunities.

Tuesday, July 25, 2006 • 10:15 pm - 12:00 pm (Double Session)
Tell Your Story
The older you get, the more you will discover opportunities to compete for recognition and access to special programs and scholarships. Quite often this competition will require you to make a personal statement or write an essay that gives the reader insight into who you are. This workshop is designed to help you identify your "story" and come up with strategies, both oral and written, for telling it.

Getting the Most Out of Your Campus Visit
It is never too early to begin visiting colleges. While the process of applying for admission is still a few years off, you can begin to learn about what campus life is like. There are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the country. Some are big. Some are small. Some are complex with many different schools in one. Each delivers education in a different manner. In this session, you will learn how and when to visit colleges, and what to look for and which questions to ask when you are on their campuses.

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 • 7:30 am - 1:30 pm
College Visits
Students will sign up ahead of time to visit one of Washington, D.C.'s many universities. Specific schools will be announced closer to the conference. Breakfast will be served on the bus, and students will be back to the conference in time for the closing luncheon.
