Opportunities for Parents at the
2010 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference

NCCEP recognizes the great work done by parents in the GEAR UP community and has created opportunities for parents to be involved in the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference.

Parent Leadership Institute

NCCEP is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our Fourth Annual Parent Leadership Institute as part of the 2010 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference. The Institute will include a variety of learning and networking opportunities for parents and/or family leaders who are involved with state or local GEAR UP partnerships, ENLACE or other college access programs.

The goal of the Parent Leadership Institute is to cultivate a group of parents with a greater capacity to promote positive change in their children, school and community, and move forward an agenda that centers around making college possible for all students. These goals will be accomplished by:

  • Providing networking opportunities for GEAR UP parents.
  • Providing a sharing forum for GEAR UP parents.
  • Raising the awareness of the variety of activities in which GEAR UP parents and families are engaged.
  • Enhancing some of the skills necessary to lead family involvement efforts in a local GEAR UP site.

The Institute is designed for parents and/or family leaders who are involved with state or local GEAR UP or other college access programs and is appropriate for both experienced and emerging parent leaders. We expect that a minimum of 80% of the audience will be GEAR UP parents/family members.

Most sessions at the Parent Leadership Institute will be presented for parents, by parents. The primary presenters at these sessions are the GEAR UP parents/family members themselves. Other GEAR UP staff are welcome to help present the session, but the point of the Institute is to facilitate parent-to-parent sharing and learning.

Sessions will be conducted in English and Spanish; NCCEP will select a minimum of two Institute sessions that will be conducted entirely in Spanish.

 Parent Leadership Awards

Image NCCEP is pleased to be presenting the Fourth Annual GEAR UP Parent Leadership Awards at the 2010 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference. Sponsored by CollegeEd, an academic and career planning curriculum developed by the College Board for grades 7 - 12, NCCEP will recognize five (5) GEAR UP parents and/or family leaders who have made a significant contribution to a GEAR UP program.

This award is designed to highlight the work of parents who have emerged as true leaders in a GEAR UP community and are:

  • Increasing the numbers of parents and families who are aware of and/or involved with GEAR UP.
  • Regularly out in the community educating families on the importance of postsecondary education and what it will take for their children to have a successful postsecondary experience.
  • Promoting the work of GEAR UP in a very public way in the community, for instance through the media or with local elected officials.
  • Leading the charge to create a college going culture in your community.
  • Leading school improvement or reform efforts in your school or community.
  • Up and coming leaders within the GEAR UP community.

The application period for the Parent Leadership Awards has closed. Winners will be announced at the end of May.
