Pre-Conference Sessions

NCCEP will host a variety of pre-conference session on Sunday, July 20th. For more information on each session, please see the descriptions below.

Product Demonstrations and Field-Testing Sessions • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Free to conference attendees
These sessions provide opportunities to learn about, see, and experience products that have helped students achieve the academic success prerequisite to college enrollment and to help education programs increase their effectiveness. Session topics include:

Instructional Technologies
Interested in developing your students' higher-order thinking skills and facilitating academic achievement? During this session companies will demonstrate software and hardware that will help GEAR UP educators engage and motivate their students. The technologies demonstrated will help teachers make learning more interactive, hands on, and project-based.

Core Academic Support: Math, Science, and Reading/Literacy
This session will provide GEAR UP practitioners an opportunity to learn about products designed to help educators create an engaging learning experience leading to higher student achievement in the core curriculum areas of math, science, and reading/literacy. Participants will have an opportunity to field test products that promote academic success in these crucial academic areas.

Test Preparation
As the college admissions process becomes increasingly competitive, admissions offices scrutinize students' scores on standardized college entrance exams ever so closely. Participation in the test preparation services session will help participants determine if partnering with a test preparation service could benefit students and GEAR UP programs in their community.

Data and Student Monitoring Systems
Experience state-of-the-art data and student monitoring systems that can help you track the progress of your GEAR UP students over time including their involvement in particular GEAR UP activities. These data acquisition and assessment tools can provide the information you need to determine which elements of your program are most successful and which can be modified in order to maximize program effectiveness.

Our collaborating partner, the U.S. Department of Education, will be hosting workshops for new and experienced GEAR UP professionals. These workshops will be conducted by GEAR UP Program Officers and other Department of Education Officials. Session topics include:

FPR Process: Closing Out Your GEAR UP Project
The U.S. Department of Education will provide information to 2002 grantees regarding the closeout of their grants. This session will include information about how to request a no-cost extension, the types of activities that can be conducted during the extension period and detailed information about the Final Performance Report that each grantee is required to file at the end of the grant performance period.

Do's and Don'ts of Fiscal Management
A primer for first-time grantees and review session for experienced federal grant administrators led by a grants administrator/expert from the U.S. Department of Education, this session will provide all of the information new and experienced GEAR UP program administrators require to successfully administer a federal GEAR UP grant. Specific rules and regulations - including budgeting and expense allocation - will be covered.

Documenting the GEAR UP Match
The U.S. Department of Education will provide a detailed review of the statutory and regulatory matching requirements for GEAR UP programs. The presentation will include a description of the types and sources of matching contributions that are permissible, how to document matching contributions, and valuation of in-kind contributions. GEAR UP grantees will share how they have successfully achieved the dollar-for-dollar match and will provide sample forms and processes developed to better document the match.

Making Your Mark – The APR Process
The U.S. Department of Education will provide technical assistance designed to assist grantees in completing an Annual Performance Report (APR). Each grantee's annual and cumulative result has a direct impact on the future of the GEAR UP program as appropriations are connected to program results aggregated from individual project data. This session will review the process for completing the web-based APR.
