Opportunities for Parents at the
2008 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference

NCCEP recognizes the great work done by parents in the GEAR UP community and has created opportunities for parents to be involved in the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference.

Parent Leadership Institute

NCCEP is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our second Parent Leadership Institute on July 21 and 22, 2008 in Washington, DC. The Institute will include a variety of skills building and networking opportunities for parents and/or family leaders who are involved with state or local GEAR UP partnerships, ENLACE or other college access programs.

The goal of the Parent Leadership Institute is to cultivate a group of parents with a greater capacity to (1) promote positive change in their children, school and community and (2) move forward an agenda that centers around making college possible for all students. This goal will be accomplished by:

  • providing networking opportunities for GEAR UP parents;
  • providing a sharing forum for GEAR UP parents;
  • raising the awareness of the variety of activities in which GEAR UP parents and families are engaged;
  • enhancing some of the skills necessary to lead family involvement effort in a local GEAR UP site; and
  • developing a set of next steps that participants will take to strengthen their role as a leader in GEAR UP family involvement and school improvement efforts.

You can register for the Parent Leadership Institute by registering for the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference and placing a check in the box next to "Parent Leadership Institute." All Institute sessions take place concurrently with the Conference sessions; Parent Leadership Institute registrants are encouraged to join the remaining conference events and activities at the conclusion of the Institute on Tuesday, July 22 at noon.

Parent Leadership Awards

NCCEP is pleased to be presenting the second GEAR UP Parent Leadership Awards at the 2008 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference. Sponsored by CollegeEd, an academic and career planning curriculum developed by the College Board for grades 7 - 12, NCCEP will recognize five (5) GEAR UP parents and/or family leaders who have made a significant contribution to a GEAR UP program. This award is designed to highlight the work of parents who have emerged as true leaders in a GEAR UP community and are:

  • increasing the numbers of parents and families who are aware of and/or involved with GEAR UP;
  • regularly out in the community educating families on the importance of postsecondary education and what it will take for their children to have a successful postsecondary experience;
  • promoting the work of GEAR UP in a very public way in the community, for instance through the media or with local elected officials;
  • leading the charge to create a college going culture in your community;
  • leading school improvement or reform efforts in your school or community; or
  • "up and coming" leaders within the GEAR UP community.

GEAR UP sites may nominate one (1) parent to be recognized at the 2008 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference in Washington, DC. NCCEP will cover the travel, lodging and conference registration for the five (5) award recipients who will also be invited to participate in the second Parent Leadership Institute that will take place at this year's conference. Award recipients will be recognized on stage at a plenary session in front of the nearly 2,000 conference attendees.

NCCEP thanks the GEAR UP community for all the applications that were submitted. Partnerships will be contacted once decisions have been made.
