About
the 2007 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference
This national convening of approximately 2,000 GEAR UP project
directors, college access professionals, and business and community
parnters is coordinated by the National Council for Community and
Education Partnerships (NCCEP) and is planned in conjunction with the
U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of this conference is to
highlight the importance of K–16 education/community partnerships
and the accomplishments of the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). The conference also serves to
facilitate the forging of new alliances among K–16 faculty; to
foster learning about other federal and foundation-sponsored college
awareness efforts as well as other academic and student support
programs; and to promote the discovery of new ways to engage local
communities, businesses, and professional associations in the work of
GEAR UP partnerships. The conference is particularly relevant to
education practitioners, business leaders, and policy makers who seek to
learn more about creating and sustaining K–16 education
collaboratives that can help improve public education and promote
students’ academic achievement.
Conference Demographics
This national conference of GEAR UP practitioners is coordinated
jointly by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Council for
Community and Education Partnerships. We expect that nearly 2,000
K–16 educators, students, administrators, business and foundation
leaders, policy makers, and others who wish to learn more about creating
and sustaining collaboratives that can spur system(s) change in
education will attend.
2006 Conference Attendee Demographics:
- 40% Middle/High School Educators
- 22% Postsecondary Educators
- 14% GEAR UP Directors
- 10% Business Partners/CBO's
- 9% Parents and Students
- 5% Other
Conference attendees come to get ideas and to access materials,
products, and services they can use in their federally funded programs.
By co-sponsoring an event, setting up an exhibit booth, and/or

with the ever-growing GEAR UP community and with NCCEP.

Product
Demonstrations and Field-Testing
These pre-conference sessions will provide companies with the
opportunity to demonstrate their products/services to college access
professionals. Products will be showcased in these areas:
Instructional Technologies:
Companies are invited to demonstrate software and hardware that will
help GEAR UP educators engage and motivate their students. These
technologies will help teachers make learning more interactive, hands
on, and project-based so as to facilitate academic achievement.
Math/Numeracy, Science, and Reading/Literacy Improvement
Programs:
GEAR UP directors will learn about products designed to help students
attain desired curricular standards. These programs will help identify
which skills students have mastered and which require further
practice.
Data and Student Monitoring Systems:
These systems can help track the progress of students over time,
including their involvement in particular GEAR UP activities, and can
provide the data needed to determine which elements are the most
successful and which need to be modified to maximize program
effectiveness.
Test Preparation Services:
Test preparation services will help project directors determine if
partnering with such a service might benefit students and GEAR UP
programs.
For additional Product Demonstration and Field-testing information,
please contact Susan Shimko at susan_shimko@edpartnerships.org.
