NCCEP GEAR UP Annual Conference Student Track

NCCEP recognizes that the student voice is one of the most important when it comes to education reform. Participating in a professional conference is a great experience that should be available to all GEAR UP students. As a result, NCCEP launched the Student Track during the 2005 Conference in San Francisco.

The Student Track is open to all GEAR UP students, from middle school to high school. Students participate in the conference just as their adult chaperones do, but attend student-focused concurrent sessions. A full description of the student concurrent sessions for middle school and high school participants can be found on our website. On the final day, students may participate in NCCEP-sponsored campus visits to Washington, D.C. area universities.

Who can participate in the Student Track?
Any student who is interested in learning more about college preparation and access. Previous participants have included:

  • Students who are presenting with their GEAR UP program as a part of a concurrent session
  • Students who were nominated to apply to the Youth Leadership Summit but were not accepted
  • Student performers
  • Students interested in participating in a professional conference

What is the Student Track experience like?
Students will participate fully in the Annual Conference. The only difference between the adult experience and the student experience will come during the concurrent sessions. Students will participate in a series of student-centered sessions discussing college preparation and access. To see a description of the middle school sessions, please click here. To see a description of the high school sessions, please click here. In addition, an orientation session will be held on Sunday night for students, where NCCEP staff will explain how to make the most of a professional conference.

How is the Student Track different than the Youth Leadership Summit?

Youth Leadership Summit

Student Track

  • Students are selected to participate through a competitive application process
  • All students are welcome to attend
  • YLS Scholars and Alumni are the responsibility of NCCEP during their time in Washington, D.C.
  • Student Track participants are the responsibility of their GEAR UP program during their time in Washington, D.C.
  • YLS Scholars and Alumni participate in a separate curriculum and agenda that runs concurrent with the Annual Conference
  • Student Track participants participate fully in the Annual Conference agenda

Who is responsible for Student Track participants?
NCCEP does not take any responsibility for student track participants. All permissions, liability, and chaperone guidelines should be handled according to the policies of the GEAR UP program or school district that sponsors the student to attend.

What is the cost for the Student Track?
The registration fee for the Student Track is $350.

What are some of the benefits of bringing students to the conference?
Participating in a professional conference can be an enriching experience for students. Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop networking skills
  • Learn more about college access
  • Meet fellow GEAR UP students from across the country
  • Experience Washington, D.C. - a first for many students!
