Reauthorization Bill
President Bush released his Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 education
budget request to Congress. In the budget request, the White House proposes to level
fund GEAR UP at $303.4 million. In the coming weeks and months, we will
be working diligently with Congress to increase the final GEAR UP FY
2009 appropriation closer to NCCEP's goal of $350 million.
In addition, the House of Representatives passed their version of the
reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, which authorizes GEAR UP.
NCCEPis extremely pleased that the bill contains a number of provisions
that will strengthen the program for students, families and communities.
The next step is for the House and Senate to work out differences
between their respective bills. Check back for developing news on the
GEAR UP appropriation and the reauthorization of the Higher Education
