National GEAR UP Week a Success!

Thank you to all the GEAR UP sites that helped to make National GEAR UP Week a success and in celebrating the edcuational achievements reached through GEAR UP. GEAR UP grantees held events highlighting the positive impact that GEAR UP has had on our students, our families, our schools, our communities, and on our nation. At NCCEP, we are collaborating closely with Congressman Fattah’s office and key personnel from the U.S. Department of Education in preparation for National GEAR UP Week. NCCEP Founder Steps Down

The National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) announces the resignation of its founder, Héctor Garza, Ed.D, MPH. Dr. Garza is stepping down from his position as the organization’s International President to dedicate his attention to leading the Consejo Nacional de Alianzas Educativas in Mexico. “Dr. Garza has shown tremendous leadership and drive as the organization’s founder and visionary. The NCCEP Board and staff extend our best wishes to him as he devotes himself fully to his groundbreaking academic achievement work in Mexico,” said Dr. Laura I. Rendón, Chair of the NCCEP Board of Directors. In January 2011, NCCEP hired Nathan Monell, CAE, as Executive Director to oversee NCCEP’s U.S. programs. For more information, please click here.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund Launches "Your Words Today" Campaign Featuring Novelas from NCCEP's Exito Escolar
HSF and the Ad Council have launched a national campaign focusing on Latino parents and families. The underlying message of Your Words Today/Tus Palabras de Hoy is a call to action for Latino parents to talk to their children about college today, stressing the importance of going to college and completing their degree. Interested parents can receive a free DVD containing information about college and three of NCCEP's Spanish language novelas, as featured in the Exito Escolar program. The HSF DVD can be supplemented with more in-depth material by purchasing the full Exito Escolar curriculum from NCCEP.

NCCEP's Éxito Escolar
Toolkit for Academic Success in the Latino Community
NCCEP's Éxito Escolar is an exciting multimedia college access curriculum designed to inform Latino students and families about ways to prepare for, apply to, and pay for postsecondary education. The bilingual curriculum is focused around a series of Spanish-language films. The final version, including four Spanish-language novelas with English subtitles, a full curriculum and student handbook, information sheets, and more is now available. NCCEP's 16 Summers
Toolkit for Academic Success
NCCEP is proud to introduce 16 Summers, a multimedia program designed to inform students and families about ways to prepare for, apply to, and pay for postsecondary education. The extensive curriculum centers around the film 16 Summers, featuring actor and musician Nick Cannon. The 16 Summers film and training materials were created for teachers, counselors, administrators, youth program coordinators, parent/family involvement coordinators, or anyone who works with students and families. Financial Education: Money Skills for Real Life
In partnership with NCCEP, the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) has developed an exciting new resource to educate high school students in the GEAR UP program on financial literacy. Available through NCCEP, this interactive website and teacher's manual provides information on how high school students can gain early control of their finances, make smart financial choices, and reflect upon the financial benefits of a college education.
